2009 Program Statistics

Now in its second century of caring, the YWCA of Central Alabama continues to serve women in adverse circumstances, whether they live in poverty or in fear for their lives. The YW is meeting critical needs by providing child care, domestic violence services and affordable housing. It offers job and leadership training, support groups, emergency shelter and advocacy. The agency allows women to have hope and to make plans for a brighter future for themselves and their children.

Here's a look at some of the ways the YWCA of Central Alabama made a positive difference in 2009:

Domestic Violence

  • provided 7,729 nights of shelter for 226 adults and 167 children
  • provided legal advocacy services for 6,410 victims of domestic abuse
  • provided legal assistance to 689 victims of domestic violence through the YWCA Family Law Center
  • provided victim support group services for 604 women and 80 children in Jefferson County
  • provided assistance to 2,518 people through the YW Crisis Line
  • reached 30 victims of domestic violence in collaboration with the Department of Human Resources through SAIL (Special Assessment Intervention Liaison)
  • maintained satellite offices in Blount and St. Clair counties

Child Care

  • provided 21 children with 4,582 days of care in KIDS Korner child care center
  • provided 81 children with 10,738 days of care in Calico Corner child care center
  • provided academic programs and tutoring to 95 children through the After-School enrichment Program

Social Justice

  • delivered the Heritage Panel program to three school groups, with a total of 75 students and 10 teachers
  • 34 people received free tax preparation through a collaboration between the YWCA and United Way.
  • Lilly Ledbetter spoke to an audience of 50 community members about her experience with gender discrimination and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

Housing

  • provided 5,618 nights of emergency housing and 9,450 meals for 35 families (133 individuals) through the YWCA’s Interfaith Hospitality House.
  • provided 18,436 nights of transitional housing for 42 adults and 58 children in 24 apartments in our downtown and YWoodlawn apartments.
  • provided 24,079 nights of permanent rental housing for 91 adults and 13 children in 77 apartments both in downtown Birmingham and in Woodlawn.
  • provided 3,087 nights of special needs permanent housing for nine adults and one child in Jefferson and St. Clair counties.
  • provided 1,460 nights of permanent housing for physically disabled individuals in four apartments in Avondale.
  • provided 6,450 nights of permanent housing for elderly residents in 18 apartments in Avondale (Birmingham) and Rosedale (Homewood).
  • sold one single family house in Edgewater (unincorporated Jefferson County) that will be occupied by a family with a low income.

My Sister’s Closet

  • provided professional clothing and accessories to 767 women from 21 shelters and referring agencies
  • provided 71 prom dresses to economically disadvantaged teenage girls from area high schools
