Capital CampaignThe YWCA Central Alabama launched its Capital Campaign to increase its capacity to strengthen families and communities. This public/private partnership will double the amount of the YWCA’s affordable housing, increase its domestic violence services and continue leadership development and quality child care for children from homeless and low-income families.

The capital campaign investment will go toward:

  • A new Interfaith Hospitality House
The current YWCA IHH, opened September 2009, is one of the few shelters for homeless two-parent families, single mothers with adolescent sons or homeless dads with children.  The old facility was inadequate to meet current demand.

  • Buying and rehabilitating 58 apartments in Woodlawn
This will revitalize a Birmingham neighborhood and provide critically needed affordable short-term and permanent housing.

  • Expanding domestic violence services in St. Clair County
The current YWCA services were broadened to provide transitional housing for DV victims where there currently is no shelter. The St. Clair County Domestic Violence Shelter opened October 2009.

  • Continuing the YWCA’s quality homeless and low-income child care
The YWCA’s childcare program is one of the few in the nation that is nationally accredited and must retain the resources and leadership to remain excellent.

  • Long-term sustainability
$1 million will be added to the YWCA Endowment.

The YWCA Central Alabama has raised funds for YWoodlawn through a partnership with the City of Birmingham and generous donations from more than 166 corporations, foundations and individuals.

Working together, we can create communities where all families have a safe, stable place to live, and adults and children can develop skills for success. We want communities where all people can live in dignity – free from violence, racism and discrimination.
