PowerUp for Domestic Violence Awareness
YWCA Central Alabama recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2020! This year’s theme is POWERUP, which encourages allies, advocates, and individuals to use their voice and devote their resources toward reducing and eliminating domestic violence in their communities.
Sept. 30 – Momma Goldberg’s Deli

Description – Kick-off Domestic Violence Awareness Month and support YWCA Central Alabama with a meal at Momma Goldberg’s Deli. 18% of all participant sales from 4-9 p.m. will be donated to support the mission of the YW!
Oct. 7 – PowerUp In Color: Black Women Survivors and the Journey to Wellness
Time -11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Description – Better understand the mental health of Black women victims and survivors of domestic violence and how allies can support. When Black women survivors speak, there’s power in their story. Learn how safety happens and mental and emotional wellness and security can be achieved.

Oct. 14 – PowerUp to Eliminate Gender-Based Violence: A Conversation Centering the LGBTQ Experience

Description – Join us as we discuss how homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and anti – transgender stigma increase risk factors and continue to create a culture of dangerous violence against women. The conversation will provide culturally and gender appropriate supportive measures and resources for those experiencing domestic violence, right here in the Central Alabama area.

Description – In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we will celebrate those lives lost to domestic violence and ignite the Central Alabama community in its own POWER to end gender-based violence. Vigils provide us with the passion and energy needed to do this difficult work. Hear reflections from local leaders on how they remain committed to ensuring the safety of victims and survivors of gender-based violence.

Description – One Place Metro Alabama Family Justice Center is hosting a 30-minute conversation and call to action with New York Times best-selling author Rachel Louise Synder.
Synder wrote the book No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us. It’s a powerful, eye-opening read that explores the roots of private violence behind closed doors in every community, including right here in the Greater Birmingham area.
