Issues & Bills We’re Watching

ALABAMA

  • HB 445 ANTI-RIOT BILL

Increases fines, penalties, and jail time for individuals deemed to be inciting or encouraging a “riot” during protests. YWCA Central Alabama believes a bill like this discourages activism and will derail people from partaking in peaceful demonstrations, which is their First Amendment Right.
  • MEDICAID EXPANSION

YWCA Central Alabama supported Cover Alabama’s Coalition Day of Action on March 25 to encourage Gov. Kay Ivey to expand Medicaid funding. Expanding Medicaid will ensure that hundreds of thousands of Alabamians will continue to receive access to health care, and it will even save jobs. Equally important, an additional 152,000 women will be able to have proper health care if additional monies are allocated to the state’s Medicaid network.

FEDERAL

  • VAWA H.R.1620

Better known as Stop Violence Against Women Act and the Victims of Crime Recovery Act (VOCA H.R, 1652) both passed on March 17th. These two acts are essential in providing necessary funding and support to continue the important work of assisting women who are survivors of domestic or intimate partner violence.
  • AMERICAN DREAM & PROMISES ACT of 2021

Referred to by the White House as a “critical first step in reforming our immigration system.” This act will make over four million Dreamer individuals eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), or possible permanent residence. (Read the Act.)
