  • Loud & Clear Event to Raise Awareness About Abuse on College Campuses

Incidents of domestic violence and sexual assault on college campuses have made headlines across the nation lately, and college students from five local schools will join forces to put an end to the abuse. Loud & Clear at the Tracks, which is scheduled for April 16, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. at Railroad Park, will unite students at Birmingham-Southern College, Miles College, Samford Univeristy, University of Montevallo and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Guante, National Poetry Slam champion, will perform at the event, which is free and hosted by the Crisis Center, Inc./Rape Response, the YWCA Central Alabama and Safehouse. Guante, a hip hop artist and activist, will provide concrete actions that students can take to make a difference. In addition, local student leaders will share what they are doing to spread awareness at their schools.
Loud & Clear is sponsored by Verizon and the Junior League of Birmingham. Participants are encouraged to bring old cell phones to donate to Verizon’s Hopeline Initiative, which provides phones for domestic violence victims to reach emergency and supportive services and to stay in touch with family members, friends and employers during a time of crisis.
There will be games, giveaways, free T-shirts for participants and food trucks on site. The Wounded Heart Project, artwork created by survivors, will be displayed, and the Clothesline Project, decorated t-shirts that express the emotions of victims, will be on exhibit.
