YWCA Central Alabama’s My Sister’s Closet reopened to the public on March 15, 2021, after one year of closed doors due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shoppers are welcome to visit the resale boutique at 2324 3rd Avenue North next to YWCA Central Alabama in downtown Birmingham. New store hours are 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday-Thursday under strict COVID-safe protocol.
My Sister’s Closet features a high-end feel but provides no-cost or low-cost finds. What started in 1986 as a small venture to help domestic violence survivors find clothing for interviews, court appearances and work settings has grown into a go-to destination for women of all backgrounds.
“The boutique provides new and gently used clothing, apparel, and accessories at no cost to women escaping domestic violence, in shelter, or in extreme life transition in an atmosphere that is welcoming, supportive, filled with dignity and designed to make them feel special,” said Angela Abdur-Rasheed, YWCA Senior Director of Economic Empowerment. My Sister’s Closet also provides that same high-end shopping experience to paying customers desiring the most fashionable frugal finds at unbelievably low costs. It’s not surprising to peruse the racks of My Sister’s Closet and find designer items, direct-from-the-store merchandise, wardrobe necessities and unique finds for as little as $5.
Proceeds from the boutique benefit the YW’s programs and services.
My Sister’s Closet welcomes donations but is adjusting protocols due to the pandemic.
“Due to COVID safety measures, My Sister’s Closet now accepts appointments for specified donations,” said Ayana Jointer, the boutique’s coordinator. In-season donation drop-offs — in easily identifiable containers, void of hangers or bags — can be scheduled during store operating hours.
