After participating in the YWCA USA’s recent Leadership and Capacity Building Institute in Texas, Brenda Hackney, the YWCA Central Alabama’s new board president, is more excited than ever about her new role.

“The two days in San Antonio were jam-packed with great programs dealing with mission impact, leadership and organizational vitality,” she said. “I came home with lots of ideas and plans to help us continue to move our YW forward. Equally important, I came away with a great sense of pride of how well we do so many things. Our organization is very respected by our peers, and I am thrilled to have this opportunity to continue to be a part of it in this new position.”

Hackney has volunteered with the YW for about 20 years. She was vice president of development during the agency’s 100th birthday celebration, and she has twice served as co-chair of the Purse & Passion Luncheon, the YWCA’s largest fundraiser. President of The Hackney Foundation and owner of Jefferson Giles Investments, Hackney is active on several other nonprofit boards. In addition, she has co-chaired the United Way’s Tocqueville Society, served on the project selection and fundraising committees for the new Rotary Trail and was a member of Leadership Birmingham and Leadership Alabama.

Kathryn Harbert, past Board president, said she was excited to be able to pass the torch to Hackney because of her devotion to the YWCA and the gifts and skills she will bring to the table as she and CEO Yolanda Sullivan lead the organization.

“Brenda has great experience and compassion for our mission,” she said. “Her financial expertise and attention to budget details make her the perfect person to work alongside Yolanda as the YW moves forward to better serve women, children and families in our community.”

New Board officers, in addition to Hackney, are: Carla S. Roberson, vice president development; Paige Daniel, vice president finance; Eleanor Griffin, vice president planning; Barbara Blair, vice president programs, Dr. Kathy Hoar, treasurer; Valerie Collins Thomas, corresponding secretary; and Lisa Q. Miller, recording secretary. Beginning their three-year board terms are Tracey Morant Adams, Mittie D. Cannon, Jill V. Deer, Patsy D. Dreher, Betsy Bugg Holloway, Cynthia G. Lamar-Hart, Lucy Thompson Marsh and Lilliam Nunez-Rodriguez.

The YW is grateful for the service of Maggie Brooke, Kate H. Cotton, April Autrey Deal, Caroline Gidiere, Susan Ritter and Bonika R. Wilson, who rolled off the Board.
