Biography

Born and raised in Birmingham, AL, Monica A. Romano has worked across the state and across the country in a variety of nonprofit settings. Joining YWCA Central Alabama in 2023 as Chief Operating Officer, and currently serving as Interim CEO, Monica brings with her over 20 years of experience in programming, development, financial administration, and operations.

She is a graduate of Auburn University with a BA in Communication and Marketing. A life-long learner, Monica continues to expand her education, most recently completing ACE: Academy of Civil Engagement (a City of Birmingham initiative bringing citizens a deeper understanding of local government), and CERT: Community Emergency Response Team (a FEMA-sponsored, State-supported, and locally run disaster response training program). Known internationally (when loved ones travel abroad) as “The World’s Most Ok Ukulele Player,” Monica enjoys participating in music and art classes through UAB’s ArtPlay Community Education programs. You’ll also often find her in the pool at the Lakeshore Foundation, hiking, or attending neighborhood association meetings.

Raised in both an interracial and interabled family, Monica is passionate about the YW’s mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. She is excited to work collaboratively within the community to secure and optimize the functionality of our nonprofit and to drive mission-centered growth for many years to come!
