The generous, engaged and energetic women who comprise the YWCA Central Alabama Junior Board never cease to impress us. In addition to raising record high numbers at this year’s annual KIDS Korner Luncheon and implementing the first annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes ® at Railroad Park, this remarkable group also coordinated a number of other projects for the children in KIDS (Kids in Distress) Korner, our child development program for children in local homeless shelters. They organized the annual Fall Festival, Cooking up Fun sessions and monthly birthday parties for the children, making a huge impact in the 2013-2014 year.
That’s why it was no surprise that they continued their legacy of service by cancelling their annual year-end celebration so they could donate the money allocated for the party to directly support KIDS Korner.
“It was a natural extension of the work that our Junior Board did together and a true example of the hearts and vision of our Junior Board members,” said 2014 Junior Board President Kitty Rogers Brown. “I can’t think of a better way to honor and celebrate the women who have served so passionately this year than by directly and tangibly supporting the children and teachers of KIDS Korner.”
We thank the Junior Board members for their generous and selfless gift to the women, children and families of the YWCA. The generosity of all of our supporters and volunteers is so important to our mission, and this group’s gift will be a tremendous help in our efforts to provide one of the only child care development programs serving homeless children in the country with NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) accreditation.
The annual year-end event is usually held as a way to welcome new members and to honor those members ending their terms. Members rolling off of the board this year include Brooke E. Adams, Nancy Biggio, 2014 Junior Board President Kitty Rogers Brown, 2014 YWhisper Chair Erin K. Stephenson and Carrie Walthall. We want to thank all of those leaving for their hearts and hands, their dedication and their support of the YW mission.
New members for the 2014-2015 year will be Abigail Bains, Sonya Boatwright, Katie Boyd Britt, Mary Cox Brown, Mary Kathryn Bryant, Helen Eckinger, Mary Ivey Edgar, Rebecca Crawford Eubanks, Amanda Sher Held, Key Richardson Hudson, Katie Bee Marshall, Casey Graves Moore, Mary Elizabeth Roberson, Morgan Robinson, Tanya Shunnarah, Kelly Taylor, Erica Williams and Elizabeth Wilson. We offer a big “YW Welcome” to each of them.
Our Junior Board is an example of how committed, caring and generous individuals of the community can truly make a difference in the lives of others in our city. We offer our sincere appreciation to the members of the 2013-2014 Junior Board for their gift and their continuing support of the YWCA.
