  • Local Organization Takes Big Strides to End Domestic Violence in Central Alabama

October 5, 2022, Birmingham, AL – YWCA Central Alabama is leading the way in making Domestic Violence Awareness a priority all month long. YWCA Domestic Violence Services takes a holistic approach to empowering victims and survivors to navigate their safety and lives – free of violence. While great strides have been made since 1987, when the Domestic Violence Awareness campaign launched nationwide, the YWCA continues to increase the visibility of the issue and the services available to survivors. YWCA is hoping to further the efforts to achieve this goal by hosting events like In Her Shoes Simulations, Candlelight Vigils (Jefferson Co, Blount Co) for families affected by domestic violence, YWe Talk: Centering Survivors, and more! YWCA also provides advocates to assist victims in navigating the many decisions and barriers faced as a result of domestic violence and provide information about navigating the court system and Protection from Abuse Orders.

“No victim/survivor should ever feel they need to walk this journey alone. Our team will stand with them and advocate on their behalf. 1 in 4 women in the United States are victims of domestic violence. This month we center survivors by lifting up their stories and raising awareness so that collectively we can put an end to gender-based violence.”

YWCA Central Alabama offers domestic violence services such as legal, shelter, counseling, support, family law, prevention and outreach and victim/survivor assistance as a part of their campaign to end domestic violence. YWCA domestic violence service advocates are located at YWCA Central Alabama’s downtown headquarters, outreach offices in Blount and St. Clair counties, Jefferson County DHR, Jefferson County Family Court and One Place Family Justice Center.

YWCA Central Alabama is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Learn more about our mission.
