The YWoodlawn Initiative

The YWCA’s newest housing includes new and renovated apartments in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Birmingham. This urban neighborhood revitalization effort known as YWoodlawn is driven by the demand for safe, decent and affordable housing in the Woodlawn neighborhood. The YWCA is working in partnership with the community to create a healthy and sustainable environment for individuals and families. 

How does this work?

YWoodlawn is a collaborative empowerment initiative intended to reduce poverty and hopelessness by

  • Reinvesting in the neighborhood
  • Providing innovative housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness
  • Introducing affordable housing for families
  • Bringing health, education and employment-based services to the community’s doorstep

What can I expect? 

YWoodlawn provides quality, safe, affordable housing to local residents in a nurturing environment designed around their needs.  

  • Seven entirely ADA accessible rental units in four complexes of rental housing, including four units accommodated to the visual and hearing impaired  
  • Fifty-eight units in four complexes of rental housing, including 46 two-bedroom apartments and 12 three-bedroom apartments
  • The YWCA’s Interfaith Hospitality House, a shelter for homeless families that has existed for 25 years nearby, relocated in a new, state-of-the-art facility  
  • A community resource center located at the gateway to YWoodlawn that offers assistance and supportive services to those seeking social and economic empowerment
